NewFields provided habitat restoration technical expertise for the site assessment and design for a vernal pool and native grassland habitat restoration project at the Santiago Park Nature Reserve in the City of Santa Ana. The vernal pool and native plant restoration are part of the larger Santiago Creek Watershed Preservation and Restoration Project (SCWPRP). NewFields staff:
- Assessed the soils to determine species lists for planting and seeding for each habitat type and methods to create the water holding capacity of the vernal pool;
- Prepared planting and seeding specifications, and maintenance and long-term maintenance specifications for the habitat areas;
- Researched the feasibility and regulatory processes to introduce animal species to the vernal pool habitat.
